Local Artist Joshua Shay is September’s Artist!

A third generation carpenter by day and second generation- at least that he knows of- artist, this wizard of creativity says that he never knew anything else so these two vocations are what he does. And does he ever! The Co-op has been abuzz with praise for his eclectic and provocative work since it was put up a few days ago. Art materials range from motherboards and copper piping to skulls and skateboards.

Skateboarding may not run in his blood, but perhaps he will begin a generational trend because one thing Josh hears a lot is, “Aren’t you too old to be skateboarding?” One thing is for sure, that his skateboards are never too old to be repurposed and integrated into his edgy art, which tends toward the post-apocalyptic.

“Everything is an art and art can be anything,” says Josh, who truly has an eye for putting EVERYthing to use in his art.

Having lived in many different places may have helped Josh to learn to see the big picture and distill it down into only what he wants in his art, which usually cannot be accused of being minimalist yet each piece has a beautiful simplicity, at least thematically.  He says that he hails from: Massachusetts, California, France, Georgia, Brooklyn and Vermont throughout his life.
